French Galas, Brunch, Irish Pubs, etc.

01 December 2013

So, this blog thing hasn't been updated for a while, which is what happens when work gets crazy around the holidays, I am busy most weekends out of town, and the "future"all the sudden comes bursting through the door demanding to be acknowledged. Lots of thoughts, lots of plans, very little down time.

Fortunately, I was blessed this past weekend to come home for Thanksgiving, surrounded by those I love and care about. It was the perfect time to relax, watch some family movies (too cute!), and take a breath. I also enjoyed some delicious chocolate/mocha cheesecake (thanks sissie) and some of the best Thanksgiving sides we have ever experimented with (goat cheese, spinach, artichoke stratta was my personal fave).

Here is a bit of what I have been up to the last few weeks. Some more details and reflections will be coming soon :)

Sunday Brunch with my mother at 2 Sparrows. Get the goat cheese cinnamon roll-to die for!

Starting the morning off right: a gin cocktail (for me) and tequila one for my mother.

After brunch we visited the photography exhibit "We Shall" at DePaul's Art Museum looking at Chicago's West and Southside neighborhoods.
Stopped by Floriole bakery to pick up a pistachio croissant while wandering around Lincoln Park.
The next set of pictures are a journey through the French American Chamber of Commerce's annual gala "Passport to France" through the food I ate. Let me just say, volunteering was definitely worth it just from the free small plates alone, with Chicago's best French restaurants, bakeries, and pâtisseries in attendance. Of course, speaking some French, dressing up, and donning a beret were a pretty good deal as well…

BEST DESSERT OF THE NIGHT: chocolate armagnac (as in the liqueur) macaron. Creamy, rich, boozy, delightful.

Mini rosewater cheesecake. Adorable.

Bailey's irish cream mousse.

Soooo much champagne (and other French wines, spirits, etc.)

Oysters with a garlic cream sauce, a mini asiago puff, and mushroom stuffed appetizer.

Traditional bread and cheese plate with brie and bleu cheese.

Second favorite dessert: chocolate mousse on the finest dark chocolate crumble crust with pear jelly.

Little slice of "buche de noël."

Sparkling lemonade with elderflower.

After all of the chocolate and cheese, a traditional sparkling water to finish off the evening!

A little peak at the 6th floor room (there were two floors of the Union League Club of Chicago)

Two whole floors of THIS…(basically!)

Next Weekend: going to the annual Randolph Street Markets with my mother.

Some awesome vintage finds!

Emmit's-continuing our journey to Chicago's "Top 100" bars.

A nice glass of Magner's after a long morning of shopping!
